On Sunday (August 24) afternoon, the ‘Tawhidi Janata’ group submitted a memorandum to the Savar Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) and Savar Model Police Station, demanding the cancellation of an Urs Sharif scheduled to be held at the residence of Kazi Jaber Al Jahangir, a follower of Sureshwar Pir, in Savar.
The memorandum, signed by 10 representatives, alleged that people were being misled through misinterpretations of religion and inappropriate statements made in the name of the Urs.
However, Kazi Jaber Al Jahangir rejected the allegations as baseless. He said the Urs had been held privately at his residence for the past 19 years and would be organised this year in accordance with religious practices. He added that no external tent or loudspeaker would be used.
Jahangir also said his residence had been attacked in the past and that he had filed a general diary (GD) with the police citing security concerns.
Savar UNO Md Saiful Islam said the complainants had been advised to remain calm and that the matter would be reviewed in consultation with the police administration.
Savar Model Police Station OC Md Saiful Alam said police were keeping a close watch on the situation and had informed senior officials. He added that necessary measures would be taken after discussions with both sides to prevent any untoward incident.
