India will not be safe, nor will West Bengal, if the country’s borders are not properly secured, Union Home Minister Amit Shah has said.
Shah made the remarks while attending an event of the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) in Siliguri on Friday. The report was published by 'The Indian Express'.
Speaking about the need for stronger border security, Shah strongly criticised former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee over what he described as a lack of cooperation from the state government. He alleged that repeated requests had been made to the previous government to provide land needed for strengthening border security, but no response was received.
However, Shah claimed that the situation has changed following the change in government in the state.
Shah visited the SSB Frontier headquarters in Siliguri on Friday, where he laid the foundation stones for several projects related to border security.
Addressing the SSB event, Shah said no previous chief minister of West Bengal had ever attended an SSB or Border Security Force (BSF) programme. He thanked current Chief Minister Shubhendu Adhikari for personally attending the event and praised his role in supporting border security initiatives.
Criticising the previous state government, Shah said the Centre had sought 1,129 acres of land for border security purposes since 2014, but had not received it. He added that repeated requests to then Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had yielded no results.
