Australia captain Pat Cummins believes Bangladesh’s confidence after their recent Test victory will present a fresh challenge for his team ahead of the second Test in Mackay.

The cricketing world had mixed reactions following Australia’s defeat to Bangladesh. While some described the result as an upset, Bangladesh dominated large portions of the Test and deserved their victory. Cummins also acknowledged Bangladesh’s strong performance.

Speaking at a press conference on Friday ahead of the second Test in Mackay, Cummins said Australia had not played anywhere near their best cricket in the previous match.

“If you lose after playing really well, you may have a lot to think about. But I feel we were nowhere near our best. They played really good cricket and deserved the win,” Cummins said.

“We are reminding ourselves of the times when we have played well before. Our preparation for this series was very good. Everyone was in good rhythm. Now we have to bring that into the match and produce a good result.”

Bangladesh’s victory was not their first Test win over Australia. The Tigers had also defeated Australia at home in 2017. Recalling that result, Cummins said Bangladesh would arrive in Mackay with plenty of confidence.

“They beat us in 2017, so this is not the first time they have beaten us. We bounced back after that. They are a very good team. They will come here with a lot of confidence. That is the challenge we have to take on,” he said.

Cummins again admitted that Australia were far from their best in the previous Test.

“We were nowhere near our best cricket in the last match. Bangladesh played very well. They are a very good cricket team. Obviously, it is not the ideal result for us, but we will try to win more matches,” he added.

The second Test will be the first international Test match to be played in Mackay. Cummins also expressed his desire to see more international matches hosted at the venue.

“It is difficult to add new matches to the schedule, but I would certainly like to come back here. The facilities, practice facilities and training arrangements were all excellent. I think people outside the major cities who love cricket can come here and enjoy the game,” the Australian captain said.
