Acting President Major (retd) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed Bir Bikram left Bangabhaban on Thursday afternoon, as the country prepared to elect a new president after 35 years.
He left the presidential palace at 1:25PM, where officials and employees of Bangabhaban bid him farewell with flowers. A smartly turned-out contingent of the armed forces presented him with a guard of honour, which he inspected before receiving the salute.
The chiefs of the three services, the president’s military and civil secretaries, and senior government officials attended the ceremony.
Hafiz Uddin exchanged farewell greetings with officials and others present before leaving the premises in a motorcade in accordance with protocol.
Hafiz Uddin assumed the office of acting president under Article 54 of the Constitution after former president Md Sahabuddin resigned on July 24, citing health reasons.
