Name confusion: Dhaka resident Shahabuddin's assets frozen

A Dhaka court has ordered the seizure of immovable properties and the freezing of movable assets belonging to a man named Md Shahabuddin over allegations of acquiring assets beyond his known income sources worth around Tk 1.87 crore.

However, the relevant court confirmed that the accused is not former President Mohammed Shahabuddin.

The Senior Special Judge’s Court in Dhaka delivered the order on Thursday (August 20) following an application by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

According to case documents, the accused Md Shahabuddin is a resident of the Siddique Bazar area in the capital. His father's name is Abdur Rob, and his permanent address is in Matarbari village under Noakhali Sadar Upazila.

The court clarified the identity to avoid confusion caused by the similarity in names.

The case documents state that an ACC investigation uncovered assets worth Tk 1,87,47,307 in the accused Md Shahabuddin's name, which were inconsistent with his known income. Consequently, a case was filed under Section 27(1) of the Anti-Corruption Commission Act, 2004.

In its application, the ACC stated that the accused might attempt to sell, transfer, or destroy the assets involved. Such actions would complicate the investigation and the presentation of evidence.

Accepting the petition, the court granted the order to freeze his movable assets and seize his immovable properties in the interest of the investigation.
