Secretary for the Ministry of Science and Technology Md. Anwar Hossain has said research outcomes must be capable of improving people's quality of life.

He stressed that research should not remain confined to publications and academic papers, rather, it must bring positive changes in society

"The ultimate measure of scientific inquiry is its tangible impact on the public's quality of life thus academic work must transition from the laboratory to the market place,'' he said while speaking as the chief guest at a seminar titled "Challenges and Way Forward in Enhancing Appropriate Technology" held at the ministry's conference room on Wednesday.

He stated that research findings must reach industries in the form of prototypes or samples to be piloted, commercialized, and ultimately create a positive social impact

"Appropriate technology does not mean choosing cheap options," he explained. ''Rather, it means selecting more timely and relevant technology."

He underscored the importance of local adaptation, adding a firm stance that "technology should be adapted to Bangladesh; Bangladesh should not be forced to adapt to technology."

Dr. Md. Sagir Ahmed, Director General of the National Institute of Biotechnology (NIB); Mahmudul Hasan, Chairman of the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Regulatory Authority; Dr. Samina Ahmad, Chairman of BCSIR, Additional Secretary Ashraf Ali Faruk among others from across the nation were present.

Heads of departments and agencies under the Ministry joined the seminar virtually.

The event concluded with a renewed pledge from the ministry to steer the nation's scientific endeavors towards practical, people-centric solutions.
