Brazil will have to do without superstar Neymar in their first World Cup group match against Morocco and possibly even throughout the entire group stage, coach Carlo Ancelotti said on Friday.

"He is working hard to be fit again as quickly as possible. We hope he can return to full training next week," Ancelotti said ahead of their opener against the 2022 semi-finalists on Saturday in New Jersey. Brazil's other opponents in the group are Haiti on June 19 and Scotland on June 24.

Neymar is still suffering from the after-effects of a calf injury. The Brazilian federation recently said the 34-year-old was making progress.

The world's still most expensive player was also absent from training on the day before the match against Morocco. The Santos striker had already missed the two warm-ups against Panama and Egypt after receiving a surprise recall from Ancelotti.

The Italian, the first non-Brazilian to coach the record five-times winners, said he had nominated Neymar not only because of his footballing qualities but also because of his experience.

"He can be a good example for the younger players in our squad," he said.

Team-mate Vinícius Júnior called Neymar an idol.

"He inspires me. I wish him a speedy recovery and I am looking forward to him finally being back on the pitch," he said.

Morocco coach Mohamed Ouahbi said his side are ready for Neymar's absence.

"We prepared for a match with and without Neymar. Nothing changes for us," the 49-year-old said.

Captain Achraf Hakimi nevertheless regrets that a duel with Neymar will not happen.

"I want to play against the best players and Neymar is among the best," said Paris Saint-Germain's Champions League winner.
