2 BRAC University students drown in Munshiganj

Two students of BRAC University drowned while bathing in a pond at West Deobhog area of Munshiganj district town on Friday.

The deceased were identified as Md Sopan, 24, son of late Mostakur Rahman from West Deobhog, and Md Azwad, 22, son of Md Ripon from Mirpur area of Dhaka. Both were second-year undergraduate students at BRAC University.

Local sources said a group of 13 to 14 students from BRAC University had come to visit Sopan's paternal home on Friday afternoon. Around 4:30 PM, while some of the students were chatting on the rooftop of the four-story residential building, Sopan and Azwad went down to bathe in the family pond inside the compound. At one point, they sank into the water as neither of them knew how to swim.

Locals said Azwad slipped and began to drown in the deep water. Sopan rushed to rescue him, but he too went under the water.

Other classmates subsequently rescued them and rushed them to Munshiganj General Hospital, where the on-duty doctor declared them dead.

Confirming the incident, Munshiganj Additional Superintendent of Police Md Kamrul Hasan said the two university students drowned while bathing during a visit to their friend's house from Dhaka.

An investigation into the incident is underway, added the official.
