Mother held over killing 1.5-year-old in Sylhet

A one-and-a-half-year-old girl was allegedly killed by her mother at Puratan Kalaruka village under Sylhet sadar upazila on Friday.

Police have arrested the mother, identified as Subina Jannat, in connection with the incident. 

The deceased toddler was identified as Maimuna Jannat Toha, daughter of Amir Ali and Subina Jannat.

According to police and locals, Amir Ali went to a local mosque for Fajr prayers early in the morning, after waking his wife up to pray. Shortly after he left, Subina allegedly killed the toddler inside the house. She reportedly attempted to attack another child of the family, who managed to flee and inform their father. 

Upon receiving the information, Deputy Commissioner (North) of Sylhet Metropolitan Police (SMP) Mohammad Saiful Islam and officer-in-charge (OC) of Jalalabad Police Station visited the spot.

Mohammad Saiful Islam said the deceased toddler was the youngest among three siblings. Relatives informed the police that the accused woman has a history of mental disorder, he said, adding that a thorough investigation is underway to unearth the motive behind the killing.

The body was recovered and sent to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital for an autopsy after a preliminary inquest report was prepared, the official added.
