A drug-addicted youth allegedly hacked his elderly paternal aunt to death and critically injured his mother and another aunt at Fulchhari upazila of Gaibandha district on Thursday.

The deceased was identified as Johura Begum, 60 and the injured are the suspect's mother Anwara Begum, 52, and his maternal aunt Zulekha Begum, 46.

The accused is identified as, Sohel, 30, a farmer by profession and son of late Samu Miah from Baje Telkupi village of the upazila.

Police and local sources said, Sohel had been showing erratic behavior for the past few days due to drug addiction. At around 6:30 AM on Wednesday Sohel suddenly attacked his mother Anwara with a sharp weapon inside their house. As she screamed and collapsed on the floor, he went on a rampage and indiscriminately hacked his aunt Zulekha.

Hearing the screams, his eldest aunt Johura Begum rushed to the spot to save them. Sohel then turned on her, stabbing her in the stomach and severing one of her hands, leaving her dead on the spot. Local residents later caught the fleeing youth and handed him over to the police.

Fulchhari Police Station officer-in-charge (OC) Durul Hoda confirmed the incident, stating that the youth has been detained and taken into custody.

The body of the deceased was recovered and legal action is currently underway, the OC added.
