2 killed in Jhenaidah lightning strikes

Two people were killed and seven others injured in separate incidents of lightning strikes during a storm in Jhenaidah Sadar and Shailkupa upazilas on Monday.

The deceased were identified as Asadul Islam, 40, a day laborer from Kushtia’s Mirpur upazila, and Anna Khatun, 45, wife of Anisur Rahman from Damukdia village of Shailkupa upazila.

According to local sources, Asadul had traveled to Mayadharpur village in Jhenaidah Sadar to work as a paddy harvester. He was caught in a sudden storm while working in a field and was struck by lightning while trying to seek shelter. He was rushed to Jhenaidah Sadar Hospital, where on-duty doctor declared him dead.

In a separate incident at Shailkupa upazila, Anna Khatun went to an orchard near her house to gather mangoes during the storm when a lightning strike killed her on the spot.

Additionally, seven other people, sustained injuries from lightning strikes across Narikelbaria at Sadar upazila and various areas of Shailkupa. The injured were rescued and admitted to Jhenaidah Sadar Hospital and Shailkupa Upazila Health Complex.

Jhenaidah District Commissioner Noman Hossain confirmed the two fatalities and stated that the local administration is monitoring the situation.
