A Bangladeshi national was killed by gunfire from the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) at the Lalmonirhat border.

The incident occurred early Thursday (14 May) at around dawn in the Amjhol border area of Gothamari Union under Hatibandha upazila.

The deceased was identified as Md Khademul, 25, son of Amzad Hossain from Uttar Amjhol village in the upazila.

According to locals and border sources, Khademul Islam along with several others went near the 905/6-S pillar area along the border under the jurisdiction of the Bonchoki BOP. At that time, a patrol team from the Paglamari camp of India’s 78 BSF Battalion opened fire at them.

Khademul sustained serious injuries to his face, chest and head in the shooting and managed to return in a wounded condition.

Locals later rescued him and took him to a private clinic in Rangpur, where he died while undergoing treatment.

Sources said the body was later taken to his home, while the incident triggered tension and concern among residents in the border area.

Regarding the incident, Lieutenant Colonel Mehedi Imam, commanding officer of the 15 BGB Battalion, said that they have received reports of a Bangladeshi being killed by BSF gunfire. However, the exact cause of the incident has not yet been confirmed.

He added that a protest has been lodged and a flag meeting has been requested with the BSF.
