Police recovered the hanging body of a woman from Phulbari upazila in Kurigram district on Saturday.

The deceased was identified as Saiful Begum, 55, wife of late Yat Ali of Naodanga area under the upazila.

According to locals, Saiful Begum had been suffering from mental illness for a long time. She lost her husband about 20 years ago and was the mother of two children. Relatives said she frequently took sleeping pills due to her condition and had previously attempted suicide on multiple occasions.

Naodanga Union Parishad (UP) Chairman Hasen Ali confirmed the incident.

Phulbari Police Station officer-in-charge (OC) Mahmud Hasan Naim suspects that she may have died by suicide after hanging, as she could not bear the suffering of her mental illness.

He added that as there were no complaints from the family or local representatives, the body was handed over for burial after completing legal formalities.
