Leaders and activists of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) attacked Dhaka University Journalists' Association (DUJA) members and Islami Chhatra Shibir activists at Shahbagh in the capital on Thursday evening.
Moreover, two Dhaka University Central Students Union (DUCSU) leaders reportedly attacked inside police station.
The incident occurred when JCD activists gathered in the Shahbagh area protesting against alleged “covert politics” on campus and remarks targeting Jaima Rahman.
At one stage, a group of activists led by DUCSU literary and cultural affairs secretary Musaddiq and social service secretary AB Zubair arrived at the scene, triggering tension between the two sides.
According to witnesses, JCD activists later attacked them, and journalists who were present to cover the incident were also assaulted during the clash.
Amid the situation, Musaddiq and Zubair took shelter inside Shahbagh Police Station. However, Musaddiq was reportedly assaulted inside the premises, while Zubair remained stranded there.
Two other student leaders, Abdullah Al Mahmud, a shibir candidate in DUCSU elections, and Sayeeduzzaman Alvi, an executive member of Masterda Surja Sen Hall Union, were also inside the police station during the incident.
Earlier on Wednesday night, six journalists were found to have been harassed by activists of the Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) in two separate incidents at Dhaka University (DU), one of which involved a mob lynching attempt.
