Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer and opposition leader Dr Shafiqur Rahman has called on the government to urgently identify alternative energy sources to address the mounting fuel crisis triggered by ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
In a statement issued amid escalating regional tensions, Dr Shafiqur warned that the country’s energy shortage has intensified in the wake of the recent war situation.
He cautioned that if global instability persists, the country’s social and economic life could face serious negative consequences in the coming days.
“To tackle this situation, the government must find alternative sources of energy and adopt realistic solutions on an urgent basis,” he said.
The Jamaat chief also urged authorities to take firm measures to prevent the emergence of new syndicates that could exploit the crisis.
He stressed the need for strict security to ensure that no fuel smuggling takes place anywhere in the country during what he described as a critical period.
Bangladesh imports the vast majority of its fuel, much of it routed through the Strait of Hormuz, which has been affected by recent hostilities.
The government has already introduced rationing measures and capped fuel sales per vehicle in an effort to stabilize supply and prevent panic buying.
