At least 10 people were injured, including four critically, in a clash between activists of Bangladesh Jatiotabadi Chhatra Dal and Islami Chhatra Shibir at Dhaka Polytechnic Institute in the capital's Tejgaon Industrial Area early Tuesday.
The confrontation took place around 1AM at residential dormitory Latif Hall.
Police said at least four of the injured sustained serious wounds.
It was learnt that tensions first erupted over alleged dominance on campus, leading to a verbal altercation between the two groups. The dispute later escalated into a chase and counter-chase, eventually turning into a violent clash.
At one stage, assailants, equipped with lethal weapons, reportedly entered rooms at Latif Hall and attacked rival activists, leaving several students seriously injured.
The violence triggered heightened tensions across the campus throughout the night. Additional police forces were deployed to bring the situation under control.
Deputy Commissioner of Tejgaon Division Ibne Mizan told media that police rushed to the scene after receiving reports of clash. Four individuals were critically injured and several others were also hurt in the incident, he added.
