Dhaka woke up to a refreshing change on Monday as the city received the first rain of the season. The winter's chill gave way to cloudy skies since morning, and light showers fell in several areas around noon. Though brief, the rain brought relief to residents and greenery across the capital.
The rainfall was light, totalling just over 2.5mm, according to the Meteorological Department. Dhaka had not seen rain since November 7, making Monday's showers the first in 114 days, bringing a long-awaited respite from the dry winter air.
The Meteorological Department had forecast the possibility of rain, along with a warning for potential Kalbaisakhi storms.
However, the feared storm did not materialize, and Dhaka was instead treated to a gentle downpour.
According to the forecast for the next five days, rain or thundershowers may occur in one or two locations in Dhaka, Khulna, Barisal, Chittagong, and Sylhet divisions over the next 24 hours. Other parts of the country are expected to remain mainly dry with partly cloudy skies, with daytime temperatures staying largely unchanged and slight cooling at night.
On Tuesday, showers may again affect parts of Dhaka, Barisal, Chittagong, and Sylhet, while the rest of the country will see mostly dry weather with temporary partly cloudy skies. Daytime temperatures are expected to rise slightly, with night temperatures remaining steady.
The season's first rain has not only brought relief to residents but also signalled the gradual transition from winter to the warmer months, offering a glimpse of the monsoon ahead.
