Inhumane activities are increasing across the world. Driven by arrogance of power, conflict, and violent ideologies, anti-people global enemies are carrying out these actions. As a result, the loss of innocent lives continues to rise. Iran is now responding to the joint attacks of the United States and Israel. The country's Supreme Religious Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has reportedly been killed in the assault. In retaliation, Iran has launched attacks in several Middle Eastern countries.
It is also true that divisions among Muslims worldwide are increasing. Perhaps this is one reason why two U.S. allies in the Middle East-Israel and Saudi Arabia-had reportedly been pressuring Trump for weeks in favor of such an attack. We are now witnessing the consequences. However, as a conscious citizen, politician, and journalist from a third-world country like Bangladesh, I strongly believe that the escalating crisis in the Middle East must be resolved diplomatically as quickly as possible.
Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has spoken on this issue multiple times. Over the past month, he reportedly held several private phone conversations with Trump, expressing support for the strike. At the same time, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had long been urging the United States to launch attacks against Iran. It has been learned that the Saudi leadership warned U.S. officials that failing to act now could allow Iran to become more aggressive, powerful, and dangerous in the future. The Crown Prince's position was also supported by his brother and Defense Minister, Khalid bin Salman. In a January meeting, he reportedly outlined potential consequences of inaction to American officials.

Saudi Arabia's stance appears to have been driven by two primary concerns: protecting its oil facilities from potential Iranian attacks and weakening its principal regional rival. In this context, the widely discussed and globally recognized Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was reportedly killed in a joint U.S.-Israeli airstrike.
U.S. President Donald Trump himself wrote on his X account that on Saturday (February 28), an airstrike targeted Khamenei's residence in Tehran. According to reports, Khamenei's daughter, son-in-law, and grandson were also killed. Trump claimed that Khamenei and other senior officials could not evade U.S. intelligence surveillance and advanced tracking systems.
Historically, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei assumed leadership of Iran in 1989 following Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini. While Khomeini laid the ideological foundation of the Islamic Revolution, Khamenei strengthened Iran's military and spiritual structures, building what he described as an unbreakable resistance front. His deep distrust of the West, formed during the bloody Iran-Iraq war of the 1980s when he served as president, shaped Iran's foreign policy for decades. Under his leadership, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) became a powerful security and economic institution extending Iran's influence throughout the Middle East.
His death marks the end of a significant chapter in Iran's history, pushing the country toward an uncertain political future. In such circumstances, not only Iran but also the broader Muslim world may suffer consequences.
From Bangladesh's perspective, any major shift in Iran's power balance may create opportunities for Pakistan, given its historical ties with the United States. If Iran weakens, Pakistan's regional role may expand. While India's Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar is reportedly maintaining active diplomatic engagement, Bangladesh's Foreign Ministry has so far remained officially silent.
Overall, recent developments in Tehran have created new uncertainty in the geopolitics of South Asia and the Middle East. For India, Iran remains an important partner, and changes there could significantly affect New Delhi's diplomacy.
The world is also watching developments around the Strait of Hormuz with growing concern. Bangladesh's energy imports depend heavily on this route. Prolonged instability could disrupt supply lines, leading to severe fuel shortages and economic strain. In this situation, Bangladesh must remain alert and proactive.
With the hope that the flames of war in the Middle East will subside, let us move forward with determination for the welfare of our beloved Bangladesh.
