JOYPURHAT, Feb 22: Newly elected Member of Parliament (MP) from Joypurhat-1 constituency, Fazlur Rahman Sayeed, set a rare example by personally taking part in a street cleaning drive with a broom in hand in the Joypurhat town on Sunday morning.

The initiative was carried out as part of a central programme of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami in the East Bazar area of the Joypurhat town at around 6:30 am. The unusual move drew widespread attention among locals, as a sitting lawmaker was seen directly involved in cleaning public roads.

Sayeed, who represents the Joypurhat-1 (Sadar-Panchbibi) constituency, began the programme before sunrise. He cleared garbage accumulated on the streets, demonstrating that maintaining cleanliness is not solely the responsibility of municipal authorities or government workers, but also a civic duty requiring public participation.

Local residents said, the MP's direct involvement had a positive impact, encouraging civic awareness and responsibility among the community.

Several leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami were present during the programme, including Joypurhat District Assistant Secretary Hasibul Alam Liton, town Ameer Maulana Saidur Rahman, and Assistant Secretary Engineer Golam Mortuza. Alongside party members, many local residents also joined the drive voluntarily, turning it into a broader community effort.

Speaking at the event, Sayeed said every citizen must come forward from their respective positions to ensure a clean and healthy environment. He added that serving the people and remaining engaged with them is his primary responsibility as a public representative.

He also expressed his commitment to addressing not only physical cleanliness but also broader social issues such as corruption, irregularities, and mismanagement.

Hasibul Alam Liton said their goal is to build Joypurhat into a district free from corruption, extortion, and violence, expressing hope that effective measures could be implemented under the leadership of the current MP.

Local resident Shahidul Islam said, it is uncommon to see an MP directly participating in such activities, and it would inspire people to keep their surroundings clean. Another passerby, Saidul Islam, said the initiative would encourage young people to become more involved in social welfare activities.
