Discussions have already begun about who will become the new President after the BNP government assumes office.
Various names are being mentioned on social media and in some news outlets.
According to a BNP source, Standing Committee member Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain is under consideration for the post of President. Another Standing Committee member Nazrul Islam Khan is also being discussed.
However, multiple BNP sources have indicated that Mosharraf Hossain's name is being strongly considered.
Discussions are ongoing within the BNP regarding the formation of the cabinet. Various names are being considered and the appointment of several leaders as ministers is almost finalized.
After formation of the new government, the current President Mohammed Shahabuddin, may resign. He mentioned this during an interview with Reuters last December.
According to the Constitution, the President's term is five years. Based on that, Mohammed Shahabuddin's tenure is set to run until April 2028. However, it has become clear from his interview that he will not remain in office until that time.
Nominated by the Awami League, 75-year-old Mohammed Shahabuddin was elected President unopposed in 2023.
