Five individuals, including Dhaka University (DU) sociology professor AKM Jamal Uddin, were detained by police from the capital’s Dhanmondi-32 on Sunday afternoon while reportedly heading to pay tribute.

According to police sources, the detentions occurred around 4:45 AM.

The identities of the other four individuals have not yet been confirmed.

Earlier in the day, Professor AKM Kamal had posted on Facebook announcing his plan to visit the Dhanmondi-32 residence to pay homage at 4:00 PM.

He invited others to join him in the tribute.

When contacted multiple times by phone to confirm whether anyone was detained in the incident, Dhanmondi Police Station’s officer-in-charge (OC) cut the calls.

Later, Ramna Divisional Dhanmondi Zone Assistant Commissioner of Police (AC) Shah Mostafa Tarikuzzaman denied their detention and said that they visited to pay tribute with flowers.

The video showing police dragging the professor has drawn attention on social media platforms, though police officials denied any detention took place following the incident at the historic residence.
