The newly elected members of parliament (MPs) are set to be sworn in on Monday (February 16) morning followed by the swearing-in of the new cabinet in the afternoon as the country is about to formally usher in a new government.

Multiple sources within the interim administration confirmed late Saturday that all final preparations for the formation of new government have been completed.

According to the plan, the oath-taking ceremony for the newly elected lawmakers will be held first on Monday morning.

Later the same day, members of the new cabinet will take their oaths of office in the afternoon.

Earlier in the day, the chief adviser’s press secretary, Shafiqul Alam, told reporters that the authorities were determined to complete the oath-taking process as quickly as possible. He said the ceremonies would take place no later than February 16 or, at the very latest, February 17, ruling out any further delay.

He added that preparatory work for the swearing-in ceremonies began on Friday. “The gazette notification of the elected members of parliament has already been published today,” he said, noting that the remaining formalities are progressing rapidly. “The chief adviser worked yesterday and again today. The team is working, and the cabinet is also working to complete everything on time.”

Under the Constitution, the oath of office for newly elected members of parliament is administered by the Speaker of the outgoing legislature, Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, or a person nominated by her.

If the oath is not administered within three days of the election results being finalized, the responsibility passes to the Chief Election Commissioner within the following three days.

In that scenario, the oath would be administered by A M M Nasir Uddin, the current Chief Election Commissioner.
