Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) Vice President (VP) Shadik Kayem warned on Saturday that students would take to the streets again if even a single student loses their life due to violence or threats.

He made the statement at a press conference held in front of DUCSU building.

Shadik Kayem emphasized that ensuring the safety of every citizen is the responsibility of the current government.

He condemned the ongoing incidents of attacks, unrest and mafia-like practices across the country, calling for an immediate end to such activities.

He also thanked Jamaat-e-Islami chief Dr. Shafiqur Rahman for instructing party leaders and workers nationwide to remain calm and raise grievances through proper channels, despite post-election tensions and potential attempts to destabilize the country.

Highlighting campus violence, the VP said four students of Dhaka University and their family members had been attacked, with one student still hospitalized.

He demanded swift action against those responsible.

He alleged that threats on campus are widespread, aimed at intimidating students. “If even a single student is harmed, we will stand in their defense, just like we did for Abu Sayeed,” he said.

He strongly rejected any attempts to revive 'gonoroom', 'guestroom' culture on campus.

On the implementation of the national referendum and reforms, Kayem urged that the July charter be promptly executed following ‘Yes’ victory in the referendum, calling for coordinated efforts from the government, opposition and all relevant stakeholders. He assured DUCSU’s full cooperation in the process.

He also claimed that despite grassroots campaigning for a ‘No’ vote by a political party, the people’s spontaneous support ensured ‘Yes’ vote’s victory nationwide.
