With the 13th National Parliamentary Election concluded, the sporting fraternity has emerged with a notable presence in the Jatiya Sangsad. A significant number of former footballers, club officials and sports organisers translated their influence from the sporting arena into electoral success, underlining the enduring connection between sport and public life in Bangladesh.
The majority of the sports-affiliated candidates in the fray contested under the banner of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), while others stood under the Jamaat-led 11-party alliance or as independent candidates.
Veteran footballer leads the way
In Bhola-3, former national footballer Major (Retd.) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed (BNP) secured victory. A distinguished winger and striker in his playing days, he represented the national side and was honoured for his contribution to football following the Liberation War. His triumph marked a symbolic moment, as the decorated sportsman once again answered a national call.
However, in Dhaka-16, former national team captain and celebrated goalkeeper Aminul Haque (BNP) fell short. The hero of Bangladesh's historic 2003 SAFF Championship victory was defeated by Abdul Baten (11-party alliance).

A strong sporting footprint in parliament
In total, a substantial majority of sports-affiliated candidates secured seats, reflecting both their grassroots appeal and the organisational strength of their political platforms. Their collective entry into Parliament marks a continuation of a long tradition in Bangladesh where sport and politics intersect, where discipline, leadership and public recognition forged on the pitch now find expression within the nation's highest legislative chamber.
The transition has been made. The next chapter will determine whether their competitive spirit can translate into tangible gains for the country's sporting future.
