A fresh controversy has emerged over the results of the 13th national parliamentary election in Panchagarh-1, as Jatiyo Nagorik Party (NCP) and 11-party alliance candidate Sarjis Alam publicly demanded a full recount of votes.
In a Facebook post late at night, Sarjis called for a comprehensive recount of ballots from all polling centres, citing allegations of irregularities in several centres and concerns over possible result manipulation.
“I respect the people’s verdict, but complaints have reached us regarding irregularities and possible alterations in results at some centres. To ensure transparency, a full recount of votes at all centres is necessary,” he wrote.
According to unofficial results, Sarjis Alam, NCP’s chief organiser for the northern region and the 11-party alliance nominee, lost the seat to BNP candidate Barrister Muhammad Naoshad Zamir by a margin of 8,120 votes.
Notably, during the announcement of results at the district returning officer’s office, Sarjis was seen sitting beside Naoshad Zamir. After the results were declared, he congratulated the BNP candidate, a gesture that drew widespread praise from attendees and observers nationwide as a sign of political maturity and a new democratic culture.
Earlier, while congratulating the winner, Sarjis said, “We contested together. I came to congratulate Barrister Naoshad Zamir. Even if the people give a mandate by a single vote, respecting that verdict is part of political decency. Honouring one’s opponent and sharing their moment of victory is our responsibility.”
However, his subsequent demand for a recount triggered mixed reactions in political circles. Local leaders and civic observers argue that calling for a full recount after accepting and congratulating the declared result sends a message of distrust toward the Election Commission and election officials.
BNP leaders were particularly critical. District BNP convener Jahirul Islam Kachchu said, “I was personally present during the result announcement. Our polling agents were stationed at every centre and we received no reports of irregularities. Sarjis Alam himself congratulated our winning candidate. Raising such claims afterward is unacceptable and reflects political immaturity.”
Meanwhile, district returning officer stated that under electoral laws, any candidate may submit a written objection or apply for a recount within the stipulated timeframe. “If a formal complaint is filed, necessary measures will be taken in accordance with the rules,” he said.
