The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has described its sweeping majority in the 13th parliamentary election as a triumph for democracy and the nation.
Speaking on Friday afternoon outside the BNP chairperson’s office in Gulshan, central election steering committee spokesperson Mahdi Amin said the party’s decisive performance reflected overwhelming public support.
“BNP is the largest and most popular party in Bangladesh. The hopes, aspirations, and emotions of the people are closely tied to BNP. It is a grassroots party of the masses,” Amin said.
He added that the election outcome demonstrated the public’s “extraordinary love” for the party, which he described as a guardian of the country’s independence, sovereignty, and nationalism.
“Today’s victory is not just BNP’s victory. This victory belongs to democracy. This victory belongs to Bangladesh,” he said.
Amin expressed confidence that BNP Chairperson Tarique Rahman, who received strong public backing, would safeguard citizens’ rights and freedoms if he assumes office in the future.
He pledged that a BNP-led government would be accountable, transparent, and people-centered.
He also said the party’s rise followed a long democratic struggle marked by enforced disappearances, killings, legal cases, and alleged human rights violations.
“We believe our leader will fulfill the expectations of the families of those who sacrificed their lives,” he added, promising that a future BNP government would work to improve living standards and protect the country’s independence and democratic institutions.
According to unofficial results from Thursday’s election, BNP secured 209 of the 297 declared seats. Jamaat-e-Islami won 68 seats.
Among BNP-led alliance partners, the BJP, Ganosamhati Andolon, and Gono Odhikar Parishad each secured one seat.
Within the Jamaat-led 11-party alliance, the Jatiya Nagorik Party (NCP) won six seats, Bangladesh Khelafat Majlis secured two, and Khelafat Majlis won one. Independent candidates claimed seven seats, while Islami Andolon Bangladesh won one seat.
Final results are expected following the Election Commission’s official announcement.
