Dhaka University (DU) Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Niaz Ahmed Khan said Tuesday that he wants to step down from his position but is willing to continue temporarily if the newly elected government requests it to avoid any administrative vacuum.
"I want to step aside from my responsibility. But if the university faces any vacuum, and if the government wants, I will continue for some more time," he told journalists at an emergency press conference at the Professor Abdul Matin Chowdhury Virtual Classroom.
Dr Niaz assumed office in August 2024 during a crisis when academic activities were halted and administration was ineffective. His goal has been to restart academics and restore stability. "We have overcome the emergency situation," he said, adding that limitations remain, but the university shows upward momentum.
He emphasized that the VC role was a trust, not a regular job, and expressed his desire for the regular government to manage administration while he cooperates fully.
Highlighting achievements, Dr Niaz noted hall unions are functional, students' rights strengthened, international rankings improved by nearly 200 steps, foreign student numbers rose by about 160%, research increased, and a TK 2,841 crore infrastructure project is underway.
He plans to request withdrawal of his deputation and return to teaching in the Development Studies department. "I have worked hard for a long time. Now I need some rest," he said.
