A local BNP leader’s mother died on Tuesday after hearing that her son had lost an eye following injuries sustained in a clash between BNP and Jamaat activists in Nandigram upazila of Bogura district.

The deceased was identified as Hazera Begum, 70.

According to sources, tension erupted on Monday night in Nandigram over allegations of distributing money to influence voters.

BNP activists allegedly detained two Jamaat workers over the accusations. When Jamaat leaders and activists moved to rescue them, a clash broke out between two sides.

During the clash, Jamaat activists allegedly attacked BNP leader Masud Rana’s house, vandalising property and assaulting him, causing Masud Rana to sustain serious injuries and one of his eyes was critically damaged.

Later, he was admitted to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital in Bogura, where doctors expressed concern that he might lose his injured eye.

After hearing the news, Hazera Begum reportedly broke down mentally, fell ill and later died before she could be taken to a doctor.

Expressing deep sorrow, Bogura-4 constituency BNP-nominated candidate Alhaz Mosharraf Hossain demanded immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of those involved in the attack.
