Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has expelled its leader Engineer Manjurul Ahsan Munshi following the circulation of a video in which he threatened voters with arson if they supported any party other than BNP.
In the widely shared footage, Munshi is heard saying that if BNP remains in power and people vote for another party, he would not spare them and would burn down their homes.
The remarks sparked widespread criticism after going viral on social media.
In a press release issued on Tuesday and signed by BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, the party announced the decision to expel Munshi from all party posts, including his primary membership.
The statement said the action was taken as Munshi’s comments and activities were in clear violation of the party’s principles, ideology and organisational discipline.
Munshi, whose candidacy had earlier been cancelled due to loan default issues, was a member of BNP National Executive Committee.
