Police recovered an abandoned mortar shell from a scrap shop in Tetulia upazila of Panchagarh district on Tuesday afternoon.
According to locals, they noticed a mortar shell-like object at around 1:30 PM in Bhai Bhai Scrap Shop, located about 800 yards inside Bangladesh, under the upazila and immediately called the national emergency service number 999.
Being informed, Tetulia Model Police Station personnel rushed to the spot and recovered the mortar shell, taking it into police custody.
Confirming the incident, Tetulia Model Police Station officer-in-charge (OC) Rashedul Islam said that the matter has been reported to higher authorities as well as the army’s bomb disposal unit.
Necessary steps will be taken and further investigation is underway, added the OC.
Police initially suspect that the mortar shell may have come into the country along with stones imported from India or Bhutan. Previously, similar mortar shells were recovered from stone piles at the Banglabandha land port and were later defused.
