Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Niaz Ahmed Khan has expressed his intention to step down from his post and return to teaching, though he has not yet taken a final decision to resign.
Speaking at an emergency press conference on Tuesday, Dr Niaz said he would submit his resignation to the President once an elected political government assumes office.
However, he noted that he is willing to continue in the role temporarily if required to avoid any administrative vacuum at the university.
“The university needs a smooth transition. If the government or stakeholders feel that my continued presence is necessary for some more time, I am ready to consider it,” he said.
The press conference was held at Professor Abdul Matin Chowdhury Virtual Classroom adjacent to the Vice-Chancellor’s office.
Dr Niaz also highlighted achievements during his tenure, particularly in faculty promotions.
He said that many long-deprived teachers were promoted by strictly following established procedures, dismissing allegations of irregularities.
Professor Dr Niaz Ahmed Khan was appointed the 30th Vice-Chancellor of Dhaka University on August 27, 2024, in the aftermath of July mass uprising.
