The Election Commission (EC) has deployed 655 judicial magistrates nationwide to deal with electoral offences under a summary trial system, aiming to ensure that the 13th National Parliamentary Election and Referendum are held in a free fair and peaceful manner.

The magistrates will start their assignments from Tuesday (10 February) and will serve for five days until 14 February, carrying out their duties with the authority of first-class magistrates.

The decision was announced in a gazette notification signed by Mohammad Didar Hossain, Deputy Secretary (Law) at Election Commission Secretariat.

The notification states that the magistrates will be in operation for the two days preceding polling, on polling day itself, and for two days after the vote, during which they will take cognisance of electoral offences on the spot and dispose of cases swiftly.
