Jatiya Nagorik Party (NCP) Convener and Jamaat-led 11-party alliance candidate for Dhaka-11 constituency Nahid Islam on Wednesday claimed that BNP has failed to field any credible contender in the upcoming national election scheduled for February 12.
Speaking to reporters during campaign activities at Malibagh area of the capital, Nahid alleged that rival candidates lack eligibility and integrity, accusing them of being loan defaulters, holders of dual citizenship or individuals involved in land grabbing, terrorism and extortion.
“We are contesting against candidates who are either loan defaulters or dual citizens. Others are accused of land grabbing, terrorism or extortion. The opposition alliance could not nominate a worthy challenger,” he said.
Nahid also alleged that the election is being overshadowed by what he described as multi-layered conspiracies, claiming that both domestic and foreign interests are involved.
He specifically alleged that indications of “major conspiracies” point to a neighbouring country.
Expressing confidence in Jamaat-led 11-party alliance, Nahid said public support for the alliance has been unprecedented. “The response from the people is overwhelming. I am confident that this alliance will secure enough seats in Parliament to form the next government,” he said.
Referring to his own constituency, Nahid claimed strong grassroots backing in Dhaka-11. “On February 12, voters will deliver a verdict against corruption, extortion and terrorism. Shapla Koli symbol will be victorious in this constituency,” he added.
Nahid further alleged that a political party is exerting pressure on media to influence election coverage.
He claimed that certain incidents, including alleged attempts to take over polling centres on election day, may be deliberately underreported.
