Election Commissioner Abdur Rahmanel Masud on Wednesday warned that strict action will be taken against officials engaged in election duties and members of law enforcement agencies if they are found to have violated the electoral code of conduct.
Speaking at a press briefing at Election Commission headquarters at Nirbachan Bhaban in the capital’s Agargaon area, Masud said any individual involved in election-related responsibilities who breaches the law or demonstrates bias may face investigation and disciplinary measures.
He said complaints can be lodged with Election Commission’s Inquiry and Adjudication Committee against officials or law enforcement personnel involved in poll duties.
“If a complaint is serious in nature, the commission may take cognisance of the matter directly and proceed with action in accordance with due process,” he said.
Masud added that upon receiving a complaint, the committee will conduct an investigation and recommend appropriate action based on its findings.
The Election Commissioner said the overall election environment remains “comparatively good” and urged leaders and activists of all political parties to cooperate with the commission in maintaining a free, fair and congenial electoral atmosphere.
During the briefing, Masud also expressed deep condolences over the death of Nuruzzaman Badol, a candidate in Sherpur-3 constituency.
He said the Election Commission has postponed the election in Sherpur-3 (Shribordi–Jhenaigati) seat following the candidate’s death.
He added that a revised election schedule for the constituency will be announced at a later date.
