The election for the Sherpur-3 (Sreebardi–Jhenaigati) constituency has been suspended following the death of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami nominated candidate Nuruzzaman Badal.
Around 10AM on Wednesday, returning officer and deputy commissioner Mahmudur Rahman confirmed this.
According to article 17(1) of the Representation of the People Order (RPO), 1972, if a duly nominated candidate dies after the deadline for withdrawal of nominations and before polling day, the election process in the concerned constituency must be immediately cancelled or postponed.
According to the law, in such a case the candidate must have been recognized by the Election Commission as a 'valid candidate.' After confirming the death of the candidate, the concerned returning officer will announce the cancellation of the election process in that constituency through a public notice and the Commission will later announce a new election schedule.
Nuruzzaman Badal, Jamaat-e-Islami Sherpur district secretary and candidate for Sherpur-3 (Sreebordi-Jhenaigati) constituency passed away early Wednesday.
According to the family, he had been suffering from kidney disease for a long time.
