Bangladesh announced its intent in emphatic fashion as the defending joint champion began the SAFF Under-19 Women's Championship with a resounding 12-0 victory over Bhutan on Saturday in Pokhara, Nepal.

Having shared the title with India in the previous edition, Bangladesh wasted little time in reaffirming their pedigree at youth level. Though the breakthrough took 27 minutes to arrive, once the deadlock was broken there was no respite for Bhutan.

Bangladesh went into the interval 4-0 ahead and returned after the break to add a further eight goals, turning the opening fixture into a one-sided exhibition of attacking football.

Munki Akter led the rout with four goals, while Trishna Rani and Alpi Akter each struck a hat-trick. Captain Arpita Bishwas and Mamuni Chakma added one apiece, as Bangladesh piled on the pressure relentlessly, scoring three times in added time alone to underline their dominance.

The result capped a near-perfect start to a tournament the Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) has treated with strategic importance. With an eye on the future, the federation sent head coach Peter Butler to Nepal while the senior national team remained in Dhaka, an unmistakable signal that age-group development is central to the long-term vision of women's football in the country.

Speaking ahead of the tournament at the official pre-competition press conference on Friday (30 January), Butler had played down immediate silverware, insisting that talent identification was his primary objective.

Butler said, "Winning the tournament is not the main focus for us."

"I am here to find players who can go on to represent Bangladesh at a higher level, including the senior national team and AFC Under-20 competitions."

He added, "For almost two years now, I have been working towards the development of football in Bangladesh. Tournaments like this are an important step in that process."

The four-nation championship is being played in a league format, with the top two teams progressing to the final. Bangladesh's next test comes on 2 February against arch-rivals India, a fixture likely to provide a far sterner examination of their credentials.
