Mahmudul Islam Chowdhury, the founding president of the International Business Forum of Bangladesh (IBFB), has urged the newly appointed US Ambassador to Bangladesh, Brent T. Christensen, to further reduce tariffs on ready-made garment exports.
The newly appointed US Ambassador visited Chattogram for the first time on Monday. IBFB founder Mahmudul Islam Chowdhury made the request at a function there. The organization gave this information in a press release on Tuesday.
After other visits to Chattogram, the new US Ambassador visited the residence of IBFB founding president, former mayor of Chattogram City and former MP Mahmudul Islam Chowdhury.
He attended a dinner there. Earlier, they discussed various issues related to the interests of the two countries.
Mahmudul Islam Chowdhury urged the Ambassador to encourage US investment and reduce export tariffs on the garment industry in the current situation in the country.
He strongly urged the Ambassador to play a role in resolving the Rohingya crisis and to continue US assistance. During the discussion, Mahmudul Islam highlighted the importance of Chattogram in the country's economic aspect. The US Ambassador expressed his intention to work jointly with IBFB in the future.
Commercial Counsellor Paul Frost and Head of the Economic Division Mike Pennell, Political Expert Firoz Ahmed and Economic Expert Asif Ahmed also participated in the discussion with the US Ambassador.
