The Election Commission has issued a show-cause notice to Sarjis Alam, the 10-party alliance candidate for the Panchagarh-1 constituency, over violating electoral code of conduct.
Sarjis Alam, who is also the northern regional chief coordinator of NCP, is contesting from Panchagarh-1, which comprises Panchagarh Sadar, Tetulia and Atwari upazilas.
The returning officer of Panchagarh-1 confirmed the matter on Saturday, saying the notice was issued following reports of campaign irregularities.
According to election officials, the violation involved the installation of gateways, billboards and banners in connection with a public rally addressed by the Jamaat-e-Islami amir.
Such displays are prohibited under the election code of conduct during the campaign period.
The returning officer said Sarjis Alam has been asked to explain why action should not be taken against him for breaching election rules.
