The High Court on Thursday dismissed a writ petition filed by BNP-nominated candidate Md Abdul Gafur Bhuiyan, effectively barring him from contesting the upcoming national election from Cumilla-10 (Lalmai-Nangalkot) over dual citizenship concerns.
A bench comprising Justice Razik-Al-Jalil and Justice Md Anowarul Islam passed the ruling, upholding the Election Commission’s earlier decision to cancel Bhuiyan’s candidacy.
Bhuiyan had filed the writ on January 20 challenging the EC’s annulment of his nomination, which followed an appeal hearing on January 18.
The cancellation came after a complaint by Kazi Nure Alam Siddiqui, a candidate of Bangladesh Cultural Muktijot, alleging dual citizenship violations.
Barristers Fida M Kamal and Ruhul Quddus represented Bhuiyan, while Advocate Yusuf Ali appeared for the Election Commission.
With the High Court rejecting his petition, Bhuiyan is now officially barred from participating in the February 12 parliamentary elections.
