NILPHAMARI, Jan 22: BNP candidate Engineer Shahrin Islam Chowdhury Tuhin kicked off his election campaign in Nilphamari with a large show of support on Thursday, following the allocation of his electoral symbol on Wednesday.
The campaign began with a massive rally from the DC Office grounds in the district town, led by Tuhin, who is a maternal cousin of BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman. The rally, part of a 'Bangladesh Election Campaign' under the party symbol of the 'Paddy Sheaf' (Dhaner Shish), attracted a large crowd of party supporters.
Addressing the post-rally gathering, Tuhin greeted the people of Nilphamari and said, "The wave of the paddy sheaf has begun across the country. People want to see BNP in power. People want development. We do not want to go backward; we want to build a developed Nilphamari. We aim to transform the future of this promising district. For that, we need the support of you, the respected voters. I request your votes under the paddy sheaf symbol."
The programme was presided over by Nilphamari District BNP Convener Mir Selim Faruk. Speeches were also delivered by District BNP Member Secretary AHM Saifullah Rubel, former district president Alamgir Sarkar, former general secretary Zahurul Alam, and former Sadar Upazila BNP General Secretary Kazi Akhtaruzzaman Jewel.
Earlier in the morning, leaders and activists from 15 unions of Sadar Upazila and various wards of Nilphamari municipality joined the main rally through smaller feeder marches.
The campaign rally later moved through the city's main streets, with participants holding posters of the BNP symbol, the paddy sheaf, and candidate Tuhin.
It may be noted that Engineer Tuhin also serves as the central convener of the Association of Engineers Bangladesh (AEB).
