Chankharpul case verdict deferred to Jan 26

As the verdict is not prepared, the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)-1 on Tuesday will not announce its scheduled judgement in a crimes against humanity case over the killing of six people in Dhaka’s Chankharpul area.

A three-member tribunal, led by Justice Md Golam Mortuza Mozumder, set the new date as the verdict is not prepared, prosecution informed media.

The accused in the case are former Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Habibur Rahman, former DMP Joint Commissioner Sudip Kumar Chakraborty, former Additional Deputy Commissioner Shah Alam Mohammad Akhtarul Islam, former Assistant Commissioner of DMP’s Ramna Zone Mohammad Imrul, former Inspector Md Arshad Hossain, constable Md Sujon, constable Imaj Hossain Emon, and constable Nasirul Islam.

The first four accused who are yet to be arrested and are being tried in absentia.
According to the prosecution, on August 5, 2024, police opened fire on a peaceful student movement at Chankharpul, leaving six people dead.

The victims were Shahriar Khan Anas, Sheikh Junayed, Md Yakub, Md Rakib Hawladar, Md Ismamul Haque and Manik Mia Shahrik. After finding evidence against the accused, the tribunal on July 14 framed charges against all eight and ordered the commencement of the trial.

During the trial, the prosecution requested the maximum punishment for all eight accused.
