More than 400 houses have been burnt down in a devastating fire at a Rohingya camp in Cox’s Bazar’s Ukhiya.
The fire originated at the Shafiullah Kata Rohingya camp's D-16 block in Cox’s Bazar’s Ukhiya around 3AM on Tuesday. It immediately began to spread.
Fire Service members brought the blaze under their control after three to three-and-a-half hours of frantic efforts, Ukhiya Fire Service station officer Dolar Tripura confirmed.
He added, getting information about the fire, eight units responded to the call and managed to bring the blaze under control at about 6:30AM.
The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
Locals suspect that the fire might have been originated from electric short circuit.
Of the burnt houses, 448 were Rohingyas and 15 were locals, said Fire Service station officer Dolan Acharya.
Seji Das, one of the victim, said, ''My cash Tk 10 lakh was burnt down which was kept to buy land.''
