Election Commissioner Anwarul Islam Sarkar on Monday said the Election Commission (EC) is not under any pressure over the upcoming national election and expressed confidence that a credible and competitive poll will be held.
Speaking to reporters, Anwarul said recent appeal hearings had strengthened the Commission's assessment of the electoral environment.
"Judging by the level of participation and the way candidates presented their arguments during the appeal hearings, it appears the election will be competitive," he said. "The manner in which candidates spoke at the hearings suggests they will carry the same momentum into the field."
Responding to questions about political parties, the commissioner said the EC does not distinguish between large and small parties. "For the Election Commission, all parties and candidates are equal," he said.
He noted that political parties are regularly engaging with the EC by submitting complaints and proposals, which he described as a healthy sign for the electoral process. "Some minor issues have already been resolved, and no major challenges have emerged so far," he added, saying the Commission is reviewing statements by political parties and taking action where necessary.
Reflecting on election management, Anwarul said an election commission typically oversees only one national election. "No commission comes into office with prior experience of conducting a national election," he said.
Reiterating the EC's stance, he said, "Just as the people want a fair election, the Election Commission wants the same."
