Navy beefs up security around St Martin's

Saint Martin's Island, often called the "Pearl of the Sea," is not just a coral gem but also one of Bangladesh's most strategically sensitive maritime frontiers. Here, the Bangladesh Navy maintains a year-round presence, ensuring national security and the protection of maritime sovereignty.

A Bangladesh Navy ship anchored just off the shoreline of Saint Martin's symbolises the Navy's unbroken vigilance on this critical outpost. According to naval officials, the deployment is aimed at both protecting the island and responding swiftly to emerging threats at sea.

"The Navy remains on guard around Saint Martin's Island at all times. Any threat or untoward incident is immediately addressed," a Navy officer stationed on the island told the Daily Observer, requesting anonymity.

As the nation's maritime guardian and a key player in the Blue Economy, the Bangladesh Navy is responsible for national defence, freedom of navigation, combating transnational threats, regional cooperation, and humanitarian assistance. Its operations are essential for economic stability, including safeguarding maritime trade, infrastructure, and resources.

With 710 km of coastline and an Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of 121,110 square kilometres, the Navy plays a crucial role in countering piracy, armed robbery, smuggling, and illegal fishing, ensuring equitable resource distribution and uninterrupted maritime trade. Approximately 90% of Bangladesh's exports and imports occur via sea routes, making naval patrolling vital to the country's economy. The Navy also conducts search and rescue, disaster relief, and rapid response operations during cyclones, floods, tidal surges, and marine accidents, minimizing economic losses and safeguarding the livelihoods of coastal communities and seafarers.

The strategic posture around Saint Martin's and the Teknaf coast has been shaped by instability across the maritime boundary in Myanmar's Rakhine State, where the Arakan Army has clashed with both junta forces and Rohingya groups. Security assessments note incidents of stray gunfire and reported abductions of Bangladeshi fishermen in recent years, necessitating constant vigilance along these waters.

Officials said coordination among the Navy, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), Coast Guard, and other agencies has intensified to prevent cross-border incursions while reassuring coastal communities and tourists.

"There is a thin maritime line between Myanmar and Bangladesh near the Naaf River beside Teknaf. Fishermen sometimes cross this line accidentally, which can lead to incidents. We are raising awareness, but our forces remain fully prepared," a senior Navy officer told the Daily Observer.

The Navy is also actively countering rumours and misinformation circulating about Saint Martin's Island, urging the public to rely on official statements rather than social media speculation.

On the humanitarian front, Navy personnel at Saint Martin's have been seen distributing warm clothes to islanders, reflecting their community engagement alongside security duties.

With the 13th national election approaching, the Navy's presence also ensures a safe and peaceful environment for voters, emphasizing professionalism, adherence to law, and the protection of constitutional rights. "Every member of the Bangladesh Navy remains fully alert, professional, and committed to duties, ensuring that citizens can exercise their right to vote freely and safely," a senior officer said.

Through vigilant patrols, countering illegal activities, disaster response, and community engagement, the Bangladesh Navy continues to fulfill its vision as the steadfast guardian of the nation's maritime domain.
