
Today is the 90th birthday of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman. He is the founder of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).
To observe the day, BNP has announced a nationwide two-day programme.
On March 26, 1971, the then Major Ziaur Rahman read out the Declaration of Independence of Bangladesh from the Kalurghat Betar Centre in Chittagong. This announcement began a new chapter in the history of Bangladesh as the nation wrested freedom from the Pakistan occupation army who surrounded to the Freedom Fighters on 16th December, 1971 at the end of nine month War of Liberation. The government awarded him the title of Bir Uttam for his bravery as War Hero in the Liberation War. With his brilliant career in the army he was promoted as the Chief of army.
Ziaur Rahman became the President of Bangladesh on April 21, 1977. Later, on September 1, 1978, he founded the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), that became one of the largest political parties in the country. After his assassination his wife Begum Khaleda Zia became BNP Chairperson and she was the first women Prime Minister of Bangladesh.
He was assassinated by a group of army officers at Chattogram Circuit House on May 30, 1981.
BNP Standing Committee members, party leaders, and workers at all levels will lay wreaths and recite Fatiha at Ziaur Rahman's grave.
His son Tarique Rahman, who has taken over as BNP Chairperson will lead the party programs for the 90th birthday celebration of Shaheed Ziaur Rahman.
The party flag will be hoisted at the BNP central office and party offices across the country on the occasion.
In addition, discussion meetings and prayer mahfils will be organized at district, metropolitan, upazila, and thana levels by BNP and its affiliated and associate organizations.
