Manchester United handed interim manager Michael Carrick a perfect start to his second spell in charge with a dominant 2-0 victory over Manchester City in Premier League at Old Trafford on Saturday.

Second-half goals from Bryan Mbeumo and Patrick Dorgu sealed an emphatic derby win, lifting the gloom that had surrounded United and dealing a major blow to City’s title hopes.

Mbeumo opened the scoring in the 65th minute on his return from AFCON duty, before Dorgu doubled the lead 10 minutes later by converting a Matheus Cunha cross.

United could have won by a wider margin but for an inspired performance by City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma and three goals ruled out for offside.

City, by contrast, were largely subdued, with Erling Haaland kept quiet as the visitors managed just one shot on target.

The defeat dented City’s pursuit of leaders Arsenal, while United moved provisionally into fourth place, marking a strong response after recent struggles that led to the end of Ruben Amorim’s tenure.

“It’s unbelievable with our fans here. We suffered a lot this season, but today we showed who we are,” said United defender Lisandro Martinez, praising Carrick’s call to harness the energy of the crowd.

The performance echoed the attacking intent Carrick displayed during his playing days and raised hopes of a revival as United look to rebuild momentum in the league.
