Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) on Saturday said there is little chance of a major cold wave affecting the country for the remainder of January, despite the period being considered the peak of the winter season.
According to BMD, much of the country is currently experiencing relatively mild winter conditions. The lowest temperature recorded on Saturday was 9 degrees Celsius in Tetulia of Panchagarh district.
Meteorological guidelines classify temperatures between 8.1 and 10 degrees Celsius as a mild cold wave.
However, the Met Office does not officially declare a cold wave when such temperatures are limited to isolated areas.
While three northern districts experienced mild cold wave conditions on Friday, temperatures showed slight improvement on Saturday.
Meteorologist AKM Nazmul Haque said temperatures are expected to remain nearly unchanged over the next two days, after which a gradual rise is likely.
He added that there are no clear signs of a new cold wave at least until January 26.
BMD has not ruled out the possibility of colder conditions later in the month but said that if the current warming trend continues, the likelihood of another cold wave in January remains low.
