Jatiya Nagorik Party (NCP) Election Management Committee Chairman Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuiyan on Saturday declared that individuals who are loan defaulters or hold dual citizenship will not be allowed to participate in elections.
He warned that the party would resort to both legal action and street protests if such candidates are given any opportunity.
Speaking at a press conference at the party’s temporary office, Asif Mahmud criticized the ongoing proceedings at Election Commission, saying that some participants are turning hearings into displays of manpower, bringing large groups or even lawyers to influence the process.
“BNP claims to be the torchbearer and pioneer of democracy, yet its supported candidates are engaged in anti-democratic activities,” he added.
He further condemned individuals who had previously amassed wealth by exploiting the country’s resources and now, despite holding dual citizenship, are attempting to become elected representatives.
“We will under no circumstances allow these dual citizens to contest elections,” he asserted.
The NCP leader emphasized that the party would not let the Election Commission conduct a careless or biased election.
Monira Sharmin, Secretary of NCP Central Election Management Committee and Advocate Zahirul Islam Musa, Head of Legal Support Subcommittee, were also present at the press briefing.
