BNP dissolves Galachipa, Dashmina upazila committees

Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has dissolved its Golachipa and Dashmina upazila unit committees in Patuakhali district after some local leaders reportedly refused to campaign for the party-supported candidate and instead backed a recently expelled leader.

The decision was communicated to district BNP unit on Saturday (January 17) through a statement signed by BNP Senior Joint Secretary Ruhul Kabir Rizvi.

Party sources said the move came after members of local committees failed to actively support Nurul Haque Nur, the candidate of Gono Odhikar Parishad (GOP), whom BNP decided to endorse for Patuakhali-3 in the upcoming parliamentary election.

According to the party, while BNP officially withdrew its own candidate to support Nurul Haque Nur, a faction of Galachipa and Dashmina upazila leaders resisted this directive and instead declared support for independent candidate Hasan Mamun, a recently expelled central executive committee member.

To maintain organizational discipline and enforce party decisions, BNP’s central leadership opted to dissolve both upazila committees and warned local leaders to campaign for the officially endorsed candidate.

Earlier, a BNP delegation led by Barisal Division’s Organizational Secretary Bilkis Jahan Shirin had met with local BNP leaders to encourage them to work for Nurul Haque Nur.

A senior BNP official, speaking anonymously, said: “Those who defy the party’s collective strategy and electoral directives leave us no choice but to take organizational action. Similar measures were taken against Hasan Mamun as well.”

Meanwhile, Siddiqur Rahman, former president of dissolved Galachipa upazila committee, said the committee members naturally had to face consequences following the expulsion of the leader they supported, adding that they continue to stand by Hasan Mamun.

Patuakhali district BNP General Secretary Advocate Mujibur Rahman Toton confirmed receipt of the dissolution letters and said further details would be shared in due course.
