A woman was stabbed to death after she tried to stop a theft at her house at Rupganj upazila in Narayanganj on Friday afternoon. The accused was later beaten to death by an angry mob.

The incident took place around 3:30 PM in the Kerabo area of Kanchan municipality.

The victim woman has been identified as Amena Begum, wife of Dewan Kamruzzaman Babul of Kerabo. The man killed in the mob beating was identified as Mehedi, son of Rezaul of Mastapur area under Kanchan municipality.

According to family members and local residents, Mehedi and several others had worked at the house four days earlier, installing tiles.

On Friday, believing the house to be empty, Mehedi allegedly entered the home with the intention of stealing. When Amena Begum confronted him, he stabbed her repeatedly with a sharp weapon.

Hearing her screams, local residents rushed to the scene. Mehedi attempted to flee but was caught by locals. Amena Begum was taken to a nearby private hospital in critical condition, where doctors declared her dead.

As news of her death spread, an enraged crowd beat Mehedi, who died at the scene.

Confirming the incident, Assistant Superintendent of Police Mehedi Islam said police arrived promptly and brought the situation under control.

“Preliminary inquests have been completed, and the bodies have been sent to Narayanganj General Hospital for autopsy. Legal proceedings are under way,” he said.
